Research

Social acceptance of deep geothermal energy and the factors influencing it are complex and dynamic. Engagement among stakeholders and media communication significantly shapes perceptions and acceptance of emerging geothermal technologies. However, evidence is limited, and social aspects are often overlooked. My aim is to understand public perceptions and acceptance of geothermal energy in different locations, explore how the media visually frames or represents geothermal energy, and analyze different stakeholder engagement strategies. I will approach this through qualitative case studies and a survey. This study will contribute to equitable and inclusive planning for future exploration and development of geothermal energy, supporting the clean energy transition.

Expected Results

Improved understanding of what shapes public perception and social acceptance around geothermal energy and associated technologies. The research will help identify effective communication and dissemination approaches to ensure that advances towards low-carbon and renewable energy sources are fully understood and accepted. The results will be of benefit for the translation of EarthSafe project results to a wide audience.
